On November 18, 2025, Lisa Lehner presented insights from our Less Is More project at the annual Austrian Symposium for Antibiotics Awareness, organized by the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, AGES – Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, and Vetmeduni Vienna.
In her talk, she focused on antibiotic prescribing and deprescribing practices and provided an update from our qualitative research on community-oriented (niedergelassener Bereich) de/prescribing.
Key points discussed included:
The crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) often takes a backseat to the immediate challenges of everyday clinical practice.
Understanding prescriptions requires attending to the practical knowledges that shape clinical decision-making.
Antibiotics carry different meanings for patients, which must be recognized and addressed when discussing deprescribing.
Addressing AMR at the first point of care means engaging with the core questions and challenges of what constitutes good care. Efforts to curb inappropriate prescribing cannot be separated from everyday clinical realities and working conditions.
